Description
Mieczysaw Weinberg, born in Warsaw in 1919, became a close friend of Shostakovich in Moscow, after fleeing eastwards before the invading Nazis in 1939. His style has much in common with Shostakovichs: fluent contrapuntal skill, a keen feeling for melody, often inflected with Jewish cantilena, and an acute sense of drama. Since his death in 1996, his vast output which includes 26 symphonies, seven operas and seventeen string quartets has enjoyed increasing recognition as some of the most individual and compelling music of the twentieth century. This recording pairs an early orchestral work, the suite Polish Tunes of 1947, with the last symphony he was to complete, dedicated to the memory of those who died in the Warsaw Ghetto, both in their first recordings.

The symphony is unlike any other by Weinberg that I know of, but like Shostakovich's 15th contains references to other composer's works. In this case it is Chopin - the 1st Ballade - and Mahler - Irdische Leben from Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Also several of his own previous works are alluded to.The symphony is dedicated to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. It is very moving -even shattering in its intensity. The Polish Tunes is a much earlier work and is quite pleasant. The sound is quite good, and the notes informative. No translations of sung text are included as the soprano, a soloist in the symphony, sings no words. All in all, highly recommended.PS: I put my CD in a player that shows timings on a TV. Timings shown were the same within 1 sec. of those given on the back of the cd box. and as the two tracks I played ended in silence there was no evidence of anything being "cut off". I do not know what caused the other reviewer problems, but I experienced none.
