Very well shot Polish war movie from the year 2012. The story of Oblawa (Ambush or Manhunt) revolves around Corporal Wydra (Marcin Dorocinski) who is a trigger-man for Commanding Officer Mak (Andrzej Zielinski) and his half-starving living in forest and hiding from Germans Polish resistance fighters. Wydra is a Silesian who has principles but at the same time has no mercy for traitors or Germans. He is secretly in love with a nurse named Pestka (Weronika Rosati) who is staying with the group. Pestka is harboring a deadly secret around which the film is based on. The film historically takes place in autumn of 1943 in the Holly Cross mountains (popular during WW II geographical area inhabited by many Polish conspirators and guerilla fighters). One day Wydra receives orders to bring out and execute a Polish traitor working with the German Gestapo. His assignment is too kill Kondolewicz (Maciej Stuhr) who is married to a woman that hates him and also wants his death. The plot of the film was shot in retrospectives or flashbacks if you like. The scenes are not organized in chronological order. It is easy to get lost if you are not paying attention. However, each scene and dialogue is crafted to perfection. The screenplay is one of the best I have seen in years, considering Polish cinema and its capabilities. The acting is so good, that it amazes me that this film has been overlooked by many international film festivals. The film in terms of historical setting and photography is pretty similar to Roza (Rose) from 2011 and directed by W. Smarzowski, also starting Marcin Dorocinski. So if you liked Oblawa, I highly recommend watching Rose (2011) by Smarzowski, who for a reason is considered in post-1990 Poland as one of the most acclaimed and controversial Polish film directors. The war in the film serves only as a back-drop story for relations between the major film characters during times of crisis, when human spirit, values, honor, and bravery are tested to maximum...there is also the love angle to the movie...or rather the unfulfilled love, or no time for love do to other more important pressing issues the main characters are struggling with...
